Down travelled to Saintfield for a local derby this weekend and continued their run of form.
Saintfield, who were missing a number of key players, found themselves defending a well drilled Downpatrick side. Ten minutes into the game, McKee showed some individual skills and his shot hit the post, the rebound was pickup up by Mark Elliot who tapped the ball home from a yard out. Down continued to apply the pressure and Taylor found himself one on one with the Saintfield keeper; Taylor did well to draw the keeper giving himself an open goal which he didn't waste.
Saintfield recovered from this early upset and applied pressure to the Down defence, but Phillip Brown, who had a great game, was on hand to keep the home team at bay.
After the restart down came out firing again, this time Mark Graham crossed the ball in from the left hand side to find Mark Elliot, who's shot from two yards, got him his second of the day. Down found their fourth goal of the day after a well-executed team goal; Gavin Ringland, who was the travelling supporters man of the match, picked the ball up from the mid-field and drilled the ball to Steven Ferguson who's quick pass found Elliot, who in turn produced a perfect deflection to find Robbie "DeBeet" Carberry at the back post who finished off the move with a well-placed strike.
Down continued to press forward in search of more goals however this left them vulnerable at the back. A Saintfield counterattack saw McCready have to make a number of quick reaction saves before Erskine managed to clear the lines. Shortly before the full time whistle Down were awarded a penalty Corner; a move straight of the training ground saw the ball being switched to Taylor who calmly beat the defended before flicking the ball into the roof of the net leaving the Saintfield keeper no chance of making a save.
The well spirited derby finished with down winning 5 goals to nil with some good hockey being played by both teams.
