This thrilling Junior 6 derby was played under the floodlights at The Demesne last weekend, with the visitors coming out on top to complete a league double over their derby rivals.

Mark Graham’s men scored six past the young Saintfield side earlier in the season and the home team could have taken something from the game had it not been for Down 'keeper David Moreland who produced a number of fine saves to keep his side in the game.

Jordan Aidey fired the visitors into the lead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute after home 'keeper Marty Johnston fouled Lewis McIntosh. Up stepped Aidey to calmly set his side on the road to victory.

Andy Teggart, William Fryer, Matthew Lennon and skipper Graham all went close for the visitors, but the first half ended with Down holding on to their slender advantage.

Within 10 minutes of the restart, Down led 2-0 with Aidey grabbing his second of the game. His mazy run took him into the heart of the Saintfield penalty area and he produced a superb finish, drilling the ball into the bottom corner of the net past Johnston who could do nothing to keep it out.

Saintfield pulled a goal back in the 55th minute and this provided them with fresh impetus. They created a number of other chances which Moreland had to be alert to keep out.

With nine minutes to go, Down wrapped all three points when Jordan Wade produced a neat finish when he was allowed too much space and time inside the Saintfield penalty area.

Graham and McIntosh should probably have converted some of the chances that came their way while the returning Trevor Lennon almost scored with his first touch of the game. His fairytale start was ruined by Johnston who produced a smart save.

Another super performance by Down's young guns and while it may only be December, there is already tremendous competition for the young player of the year award this season.
