Down 1st XI vs NICS 3rd XI - 4th November 2017

This weekend saw Down take on a strong Civil Service third eleven in the Junior league Cup. Down are the ones to beat in this competition and saw off Civil Service with a two nil win. Down played in front of a home crowd and were pleased to welcomed Mark Graham back to the side.

Civil Service started strong and put the down defence under pressure, Hamilton, Brown and Erskine held strong and Service couldn't find a way through. Frustration set in and tempers flared resulting in Brown being asked to take a rest for a few minutes. This provided David Ferris's side with the motivations they needed and they pressed the Service defence for the remainder of the half. Neither team managed to gain an advantage by half time.

The second half saw Down continue to apply the pressure with the breakthrough coming from a quick ball out of defence from Philip Brown, this was picked up by Mark Graham who linked in with Kyle Patterson to tear through the Service defence, a cleaver back pass, by Kyle, from in front of the goal found Mark Elliott who made no mistake from that range.

Service prodded the Down defence in return and McCready was forced to clear his lines on a few occasions. Allister Duff, who was strong in the centre of the part, picked out Chris Taylor who's fly hit produced a great stick save by Stephen Robb, the Service 'Keeper.

Again Down pressed forward, this time McKee picked up the ball and find Taylor in the circle who took the ball towards the net drawing Robb off his line, only to square the Ball to Elliott who was waiting in his traditional spot to push the ball over the line.

Civil Service continued to press the down defence in the final minutes of the game, but Down who had played well as a team, didn't give service and opportunities. A clean sheet and home win was well earned.
