Down’s senior side hammered Omagh for six at Malone Park last weekend to continue their march towards a possible league title.
Once again, Omagh 'keeper, Bobbie Hawkes, was outstanding and played a key role in keeping the score below double figures.
Down are scoring goals for fun this season and this weekend face East Antrim at Paisley Park. Jeremy McCready's side will be out to pick up another three points before taking on Crossgar in two weeks' time.
But back to last Saturday in a game played in freezing cold conditions. But none of the home side felt the cold as they brushed aside their opponents with ease.
Willie Price made his first start for the senior side this season and had oceans of space to exploit in his full back berth. Time and again he picked out midfielders Paul Tate and Chris Taylor with precision passes as the locals dominated proceedings.
Ashley Gibson opened the scoring for Down in the third minute when he collected a pass from Ferguson, jinked past a defender before drawing Hawkes off his line and slipping the ball into the net.
Five minutes later Down went 2-0 with a training ground short corner routine. Chris Taylor's push out found its way to Jareth McCready and his perfectly timed shot flew into the corner of the net for a great goal.
It was all one-way traffic at this stage, with Omagh forced to defend in numbers. Paul Tate, Stephen Ferguson and Taylor had the run of the midfield and while the home side created numerous chances, Hawkes again proved while he is one of the most accomplished 'keepers in the league.
Gibson then got his second of the afternoon when he found himself with time and space inside the penalty area before drilling the ball home.
Down were keen to start the second half the same way they had finished the first and went 4-0 ahead in the 47th minute.
Tate's surging runs caused problems for the Omagh defence all afternoon and he was instrumental in creating his side's fourth goal of the afternoon.
He beat his marker and fired towards goal, but the ball took a wicked deflection and looped up into the air. It may have been going into the top corner, but Taylor nipped in to smash it into the net just to make sure.
With a four-goal advantage, Omagh knew they had to work hard to keep the damage to a minimum and had to thank Hawkes for year another inspired performance.
Down went 5-0 when Ferguson when Ferguson finished off a great team move involving several players, including Tate, Taylor and Ringland.
But the home side weren't content with five goals and went in search of more. Hawkes produced a number of saves before Taylor got his second goal of the day to complete a 6-0 rout.
While emphatic wins are impressive, Down know the most important thing is to keep winning, putting the points on the board. This weekend its East Antrim away and another disciplined performance is essential.
