This Junior 6 derby clash at Malone Park saw the visitors arrive with a very young side apart from the experienced Marty Johnston and Bertie Hamilton.

The home side also played their crop of rising stars and if both clubs can keep their respective teenagers together, there's no doubt they will soon be ready for the step to the respective senior sides.

One of the stars of the show for the home side was Andy Teggart who bagged his first ever hat-trick for the club and there wasn't a bad goal among them.

Down have started well and skipper Mark Graham is delighted by the effort and commitment of the side’s young players which was very much in evidence in this derby clash, with top performances from Matthew Lennon and Ryan Swail, with the older hands of Gary Brown and Mark Elliott also catching the eye.

The young Saintfield team was always going to be up against it and so it proved, but the young players should keep their heads up and maintain their impressive level of commitment.

Down took the lead in the 15th minute when Teggart scored the first of his three on the day. He was set up by Elliott with the home striker picking his spot past Johnston in the Saintfield goal.

Ten minutes later Teggart was at it again, finding himself with time and space inside the penalty area to slot the ball home. It was hard work for the young visitors and 10 minutes from the interval Ryan Swail, who had earlier impressed for the club's senior side, swooped to score past Johnston after a ball into the penalty area cannoned off a defender's stick into the path of the teenager.

To Saintfield's credit, they responded magnificently, and made the most of some poor home defending three minutes before the interval to make it 3-1.

Skipper Graham demanded more from his players in the second period and they responded. Livewire Lewis McIntosh pounced to make it 4-1, displaying the classic predatory instincts of an alert centre forward when he latched on to an inch-perfect cross from Lennon.

Down were starting to turn the screw and the experienced Elliott, who probably teaches some of the visitors at Saintfield High School, scored to make it 5-1 and Teggart popped up with his side’s sixth goal and his third near the end.

This weekend, Down seconds face the long journey to face Omagh, while Saintfield seconds are at home to Bangor fifths.
