This is one game Down seconds will want to forget in a hurry.

They were outclassed throughout the 70 minutes when Clive Russell, the man responsible for introducing two of the visiting players to hockey, was outstanding in the middle of the park.

The two in question were Raymond McClurg and Colin Gibson and while Russell's protagonists battled to get the better of their mentor, they didn't succeed.

Down went into the game missing the services of Willie Price and goalkeeper, Johnny Lennon.
Chris Lennon took over between the posts, but could not be blamed for any of the goals.

Kilkeel were a class apart on the synthetic surface, yet for all their dominance, they only led by a single goal at the interval.

But they put that right after the interval when they rammed home four, as Down struggled to reach the Kilkeel 25-yard line.

With Russell conducting the orchestra, Kilkeel played the sweetest of tunes and were worthy winners in the end.

Skipper Johnny Lennon had a chance to score from a short corner for Down in the dying seconds of the game, but failed to hit the target.

This Saturday, the seconds face the PSNI seconds at Malone Park and will be looking for a morale-boosting win to get their season back on track.
