Down thirds and Omagh seconds could easily have played a game of water polo at Malone Park last weekend.

Pouring rain left parts of the pitch flooded, but, to their credit, both teams battled away and were rewarded with a point each.

Down fielded a side comprising a mix of youth and experience, while Omagh were able to field a reasonably strong squad as their senior side's game against Larne didn't go ahead as scheduled.

Cecil Telford and James Cunningham played well for the locals and debut 'keeper, David Moreland, produced a number of fine stops.

At the other end, Stephen Strain's persistent running was rewarded when he fired his side into the lead in the first half. The Junior 7 encounter was largely a midfield battle and both sides effectively cancelled each other out at times.

The locals were keen to make the most of home advantage in the second half and with 10 minutes to go it looked as though they were going to bag maximum points.

But Omagh were awarded a short corner with a forward's shot deflected past the unfortunate Moreland for an equaliser.

As the rain continued to pour, both sides were delighted to hear the final whistle to end a thoroughly miserable afternoon weatherwise.
